A health check, or just fix the symptom?
You have two ways to deal with a machine that feels off. Chase the symptom you noticed, or pay for a proper look at the whole system. Both are reasonable, and the choice comes down to how long the problem has been building.
The choice
| Option | Good when | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Fix the single symptom | One clear fault, recent, machine otherwise fine | Fastest and cheapest. Solves the thing you rang about. |
| Full health check | General slowness, odd crashes, or a machine you have not looked at in years | A run through drive health, memory, startup load, updates and backups, with a short list of what needs doing. |
What a check actually covers
- Drive health and remaining life, so you know if a failure is coming.
- Startup load and what is running without your knowledge.
- Memory and core temperature under load.
- Whether your updates and backup are doing their job.
I write down what I find, in plain words, and mark what is urgent against what can wait. You are not obliged to have me fix anything on the list.
When a check is a waste of money
If your machine is two years old, runs well and has one obvious fault, a full check is money you do not need to spend. If a single program will not open, that is a single program. If the drive is healthy and the memory is fine, I will say so rather than manufacture a list of jobs.
A check earns its place when the complaints are vague or when the stakes are high. A machine holding the only copy of your business accounts is worth checking before it fails, not after.
My recommendation
If one thing is broken, fix that one thing. A health check earns its place when the complaints are vague. "It is slow", "it freezes sometimes", "I am not sure if my files are safe" are all signs the problem is spread out, and chasing them one at a time wastes money.
Why I would check before I bill
A diagnosis is not the same as a repair, and I will not sell you repairs you do not need. If the check finds a dying drive, that is worth knowing before it takes your files with it. If it finds nothing wrong, I will tell you so and that is that.
The rate is $150 per hour including GST with no callout fee. Testing on a drop-off is capped at about three hours, so a check will not run away with your wallet. Most jobs are completed within 24 hours.
You are welcome to sit in while I go through it, remote or in person, and ask why each item matters. I would rather you understood your own machine than took my word for it.
Call 0477 319 160 and describe what you have noticed. If the machine still boots I can often run the check remote, same day. Or email [email protected]">[email protected].
